The African Medical Education Symposium

Home, named for the Sub-Saharan African Medical Schools Study, is a portal for information on medical education in Sub-Saharan Africa. We highlight reports and articles that shed light on the current state of medical education in the region or describe innovations and trends that will shape the future of medical education in Africa. We also provide links to relevant resources as well as information about the pioneering work done by the SAMSS team.

Sub-Saharan Africa, as a whole, has an extremely low physician to population ratio, just 13/100,000 compared to countries such as India (60/100,000), Brazil (192/100,000) and the United States (280/100,000). Individual countries on the continent have physician to population ratios as low as 1-2/100,000. Any efforts to stabilize and improve health in the region must address this physician shortage. Delivery of health care services cannot happen in the absence of a viable workforce.

The Sub-Saharan African Medical Schools Study (SAMSS) is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, housed within the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, and guided by an Advisory Committee made up of African medical educators, public officials and experts in medical education in Sub-Saharan Africa. The goal of SAMSS is to increase the level of practical knowledge about medical education in Sub-Saharan Africa in order to inform educators, policy makers, and international donors about the challenges and opportunities for increasing the capacity of African medical schools and the retention of their graduates.
Dr. Gilbert Kombe was a member of the SAMSS Secretariat.  He passed away late 2009.  The SAMSS Secretariat and the SAMSS Advisory Committee miss him very much and we wish his family well.  A trubute to him is available at
